From Publishers Weekly
Traveling the winding highways and back roads of the Arkansas Ozarks, Campbell makes house calls on ailing pianos and briefly enters the lives of their owners. From the highly polished, expensive Steinway that no one has used in years to the battered old upright some hard-pressed mother has bought for $50 so the kids can learn to play, she describes a wide range of family situations and dreams that these instruments symbolize. Sometimes a piano is in such hopeless condition that she knows it should be abandoned, but, sensitive to its importance to the owner, she does her best to recover its ability to make music. Her skills are a source of pleasure to her, not only because of her love of music and the human insights these visits provide, but also because of the delight she takes in her daily travels through the beautiful Ozark countryside, where her family has lived for generations. Campbell taught school and held a variety of jobs to support her children before learning to tune pianos from her music-teacher father. Her musings on the people she meets, the areas she drives through and the intricacies of piano tuning are thoughtful and engaging, offering views of life from a unique vantage. The peculiar craft of piano tuning is not the actual subject of this collection of essays set in the Arkansas Ozarks. Rather, it invites the reader to a privileged view of the idiosyncrasies of human nature as the author travels on her daily rounds from the concert halls of cities to one-room churches on isolated dirt roads. Ministering to her clientele and their pianos like an old-fashioned country doctor, the author encounters unforgettable personalities, a variety of instruments, and the breathtaking Ozarks.

Framed in the context of a love story and its spiritual aftermath twenty years later, this tragicomic adventure reveals social implications of the cosmic order through the strange ¡°geophysics¡± of a very strange man. The story will take you from the majestic shores of the Andaman Sea to the ancient temples of Malta, and into the ridiculous trials of forty nationalities striving to keep a ramshackle oil field running in the Libyan Sahara. It will take you on an incredible journey up the Nile in a supreme effort to preempt a terrorist plot. And this madcap action will give you a glimpse into the meaning of the pyramids and Stonehenge. It will show you how the biosphere has evolved to give us three minds, not one. It will show you how to outreach your birth and your death and transcend the whole of natural history. It will make you happy and sad and wonder profoundly. It will entertain and excite you while making you think as never before.

From Publishers Weekly
This gripping narrative elaborates Campbell’s eight-part Philadelphia Inquirer series on a disastrous 13-day period in January 1999 when four commercial clam boats sank while fishing in the Atlantic Ocean. Campbell was able to get close to many surviving fisherman and their families, and their stories, plus Campbell’s own extensive research on the clam fishing industry, make for a moving, balanced picture of a disaster greatly exacerbated by poor safety standards, negligent industry practices, and the recalcitrance of the fishermen themselves. As Campbell recounts the wrecks, fascinating details of clam fishing emerge: the extensive drug use among fishermen; the quick, bitter results of hypothermia at sea; and the proper loading rules for clams and quahogs the two quarry upon whose capture a fishing boat’s success is marked. As Campbell makes clear, even the most skilled fishermen often have little real understanding of vessel stability. This, along with the fact that many clam boats were not required to have inspections and the “very design of many fishing boats in the United States is suspect, according to the naval architects,” helped produce disastrous results. Campbell’s dramatic, highly personal reconstruction of the accidents and the sailors’ last few days on land will remind readers of The Perfect Storm. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
In the winter of 1999, four clam boats were lost in the North Atlantic. One sank because of a navigational error and without loss of life, but the other three took a total of 10 men with them. Causes included bad weather, questionable seamanship, poor maintenance, the fact that a fully loaded clam dragger violates most principles of naval architecture, and understaffing of the Coast Guard’s usually valiant inspection and search-and-rescue efforts. Campbell combines portraits of the men–warts and all, with two of those warts being high incidences of drug use and marital trouble–the boats, and the industry (including its regulations, improbable hardware, and prey) with the actual events of that two-week period, the deadliest in the East Coast clam fisheries’ history. An altogether absorbing book and a reminder that humble clam chowder is paid for in lives and that going to sea in ships for one’s living will always be dangerous. A worthy shelf mate for Sebastian Junger’s Perfect Storm (1997) and Patrick Dillon’s Lost at Sea (1998). Roland GreenCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved
